25 JUL 2010

We woke up to another wonderful sunny day in Saskatoon. This really was a family day where we got up to sunshine and a sense of peace. We sat around and relaxed until it was time to head off on our day’s adventure. Today is planned by Lewis and Sharon.

We are off to explore a bit of SK today by driving down to see the dam at Diefenbaker Lake. The drive through the prairies always surprises me with the low sky in the horizon, the incredible open spaces around and the lack of houses.

I have to wonder what it must be like to live on some of these farms so isolated from others. I am so used to having people living close and being able to visit easily by walking. Then I think about the winters and shudder at the idea of being stuck on a farm for days at a time. Hard to believe I was born in AB, but I really have grown up in BC.

The Dam and Lake are really beautiful. The created lake is so large it is hard to believe it is man made. What really surprises me is that the dam is not really that tall and is made of earth. Therefore the lake can not be very deep. We looked at the spillway and decided that it would be a great water tubbing slide. I was thinking of how to compare it to Kamloops Lake but it really is very different.  It is much wider and longer than Kamloops Lake, but not nearly as deep.  On the map you can see the water shed in the 3 prarie provinces and also if you look closely can pick out the lake.

Wes was pleasantly surprised to learn that there is a bit of a beach and swimming area at the information center. Of course he had to go for a swim (I try to avoid cold water swims myself) so now he has swam in BC and SK lakes this year. He has swam in AB lakes before just not this year. I think he has decided that swimming in a lake in every province is a new goal.

We then decided to drive on to Lookout where the Sky Bridge is found.

This is a foot bridge (previously train) that is part of the Trans Canada Trail and is the longest footbridge in Canada at almost a full km in length. The views from the bridge of the Sask River are well worth the walk – even in the sunny warm weather. As is usual on the prairies there is a cooling breeze.

From here we traveled home in time for a fantastic bbq dinner prepared by Lewis and Sharon. After dinner we went to the movies to watch “The Last Airbender”. We enjoyed the movie, but more importantly, we enjoyed the time with Lewis and Sharon, relaxing, visiting and sharing.

Tomorrow we are off to Yorkton to spend a bit of time with my sister, so this phase of the trip is coming to a close.
