04 AUG 2010

Niagara Falls, here we come. Fortified with pancakes covered with REAL maple syrup we stepped outside to discover another hot humid day waiting. Already we know that we will be a tab warm but not chilled by the spray from the falls.

We enjoy looking over more of this beautiful country as we travel the short distance to Niagara Falls wondering how we will figure out where to go and what to do. It was so easy, as soon as got down towards the falls we saw a park all day sign, so we did. We figured the cost of $10 for the day was really good, until we walked around the block to discover several advertising a $5 for the day rate.. man our Scottish blood was not happy but we consoled ourselves with – well it is not that much different and how did we know otherwise? Did either explanation work for you? Not sure it worked for us either but what is done is done so get on with the day.

We had our first view of the falls and could only think WOW. The Maid of the Mist was calling our name so we had to go and find where to get tickets and take the ride. If you have not done this, we highly recommend that you do. The sense of the power and magnificence of the falls from the bottom is not easily described so I will not do so but will share the pictures. Now the pictures are fun to take as you try to protect your camera from the mist/spray/dampness and still get the great shots you want. I did end up testing the water repellent level of the camera and we will see soon if I did.

We returned from the Maid of the Mist to finally get through to the Pension Board again and learn that they have all things in place so we are back on track. What a relief.

After the water ride we wondered around the gardens and along the sidewalk overlooking the falls. On the far side (US) there is a viewing station that is cantilevered outward which must be great. However the best view from my perspective is from Canada’s side where you can see all the falls, especially the horseshoe falls. As we walked along up river I was taken by how flat the water looked.

There are some rapids further up but before the falls and even an old barge marooned. The water depth does not seem that deep, and considering there is about 54 million gallons of water PER MINUTE flowing over the falls, you would expect more. By the way, during the winter the volume of water drops to just over 30 million gallons per minute.

We enjoyed a lunch sitting in the complex at Table Rock Welcome center where we spend lots of time panting trying to cool off. It is hard to describe how humid and hot it can be in this area. The only saving grace is the mist from the falls and a cooling breeze. Any time you can find a spot in the shade of tree you are instantly relieved.

After lunch we walked through the Floral Showhouse and gardens. Incredible. I did not take many pictures but did find the pond lilly pads with showy flowers irresistible.

After walking back it was mid afternoon and we stopped for a pop and talked to a couple who really encouraged us to take the Walk Behind the Falls. So we got tickets but the earliest we could go would be in about 90 minutes. We took that time to find a park bench, get out our books and veg. Well I read, took pictures of the black squirrel and Wes slept.

Under the Falls was really wet but so interesting. There are a couple of viewing stations looking out from behind the falls but difficult to see anything. The mist and grey water really obscures any hope of a view. What did I expect? Then we went to the side of the falls to the viewing station. WOW. The timing to be there was perfect I think since we had a rainbow over the falls, great picture opportunities and we could watch the Maid of the Mist come in and out. Naturally we got soaked again, but nice to cool with.

After this we decided to find a place to eat and that involved going up to the upper level so we decided to take the railway up the hill. We could have walked it several times by the time we actually managed to get up through the lineups, but it was fun touristy thing to do.

After dinner we headed back to Cayuga for the night both hot and tired, but feeling we had a really good day.
