I have noted that the Canadian Trans Canada is highway 1 in most provinces, but in Quebec it changes to 20 – still the Trans Canada. But in New Brunswick it becomes number 1 again.
No confusion involved for sure. At any rate the highway runs along the Saint Lawrence River so we had to stop at one point to sit beside the river and enjoy the views.
Wes was particularly interested in the Laurentian Mountains that run along the opposite side of the river. No, we did not go find any hiking trails.
Driving along we commented on the way the farms were laid out and remembered our high school social studies class where we remember that all land grants had water front – but not too much – and went back from the river a long distance thus creating long skinny farms. The rows of bushes and fences reinforced this view of a system set up approximately 300 hundred years ago when the primary method of transportation was the seaway.
We have talked to my Aunt Kathryn who told me that my cousin – Ruth – was at their cabin which is on the way to Fredericton, so we decided to stop in and visit with her. This means making a phone call to get an address to a location that is a bit out of the way – go to Canterberry, then on to Fosterville, and around the lake on a road (not sure of the name we are told) and down the lane beside the garbage bin to the last house. Yeah, try putting that into a GPS. Actually, when we got hold of Ruth she supplied the street names so we did not get lost.
As we crossed into New Brunswick, we were reminded to change the clock again – wow 4 hours off schedule each day.
We also contacted my cousin Sharon in Halifax to learn that Stephen and Kathie (cousins from Prince George) were visiting and they were having my aunt’s birthday bbq on Friday. We are going to join them so now we have a schedule to work with. This means we will go to Halifax on Friday and return to Fredericton to visit more cousins on our way to the US later in the month.
So we arrived at the cabin to meet Ruth, her girls and some of their friends. We had fun with their company and I had fun discussing photography and cameras with Ruth’s daughter’s friend. (Confused yet?) Never mind the linkages; it was a good visit and nice meeting new people.
Wes managed to bag another province and lake by swimming in East Grand Lake, New Brunswick. Actually since this lake spans the US border with Maine he wonders if he actually swam in a US lake as well.
We have been invited to stay the night at the cabin and go into Fredericton in the morning to meet my aunt. This means an early start but it is so nice here at the cabin and I have been able to enjoy taking photos of the sunset over the lake. Life is relaxing and tomorrow will be a new day.
Now to visit with my cousin and help Wes sort out the family tree – no easy feat I assure you. Someday I would like to have Wade and Lewis come out here to meet our relatives.
