What at start to today – RAIN!!!! We awoke to the pitter patter of rain drops on the tents – ok – that makes it sound like a drizzle and believe me it was not. This raised the question about how to pack up the tent and keep it dry – not going to happen. So we packed up as quickly as we could and the tent, ground sheet and fly are in the car wet. Not sure when we will be able to get them all dryed but that is another day’s adventure.
Today, we have decided that the weather forecast makes tenting a bad choice. So out came the maps where to go and what to do. We finally decided that the drive to Washington DC. This would be a long day but if it is raining all day it was a better way to spend the day than sitting in a motel room.
OK off we head south only to learn that tolls are going to be a regular occurrences. Today it seemed that every time we drove anywhere there was a toll involved. By the end of the day we had paid 6 tolls totalling $18.00. No kidding, at one point we paid a toll leaving one state, a toll entering the next state and a bridge toll inbetween. This in less than 10 miles. Add to that the $9.00 from yesterday the total is $27.00. Can not wait to discover how much more we get to pay as we continue south. Is this a form of taxation?
Ok, we actually travelled through several cities successfully. I was a bit concerned about the drive through such cities as Providence (where we managed to almost go the wrong way on a one way street), past New London, through New Haven and finally to NEW YORK – wow what a fun drive that part was.
New York is not really difficult to get through as long as you have a GPS, a navigator, skilled driving skills and LOTS of patience. Really just a snap. Ok, we managed to get through there early afternoon thinking it was outside of rush hour – but maybe there is not such thing as outside rush hour.
After New York the road was really strange. At times it was slow – real slow – and other times it was crazy fast. At all times the road was busy with all the lanes hectic. We did marvel at the number of lanes, collector lanes and over passes. I really did think it was like a bowl of spaghetti. In the journey today we were up, over, under, through and on every type of road possible for a car. In that sense it was really unique driving.
However, the real adventure was getting through Washington DC to Arlington where we got a hotel. First we did not have to go on the beltway, but over it. That is the good news. The bad news is that it was rush hour here and we crawled for miles. We took a tunnel under a part of the city and even with 6 lanes going our way, it was so slow. Then we got over to Arlington and had some construction to deal with, a round about that really was not making it hard and confusing to sort out. We managed to get through it and after Wes asked me how we managed to do so, and neither of us could answer. We just did but don’t ask how.
We got to the hotel finally both ready to call it a day. When we checked in we booked a city tour that is good for 2 days. It is a double Decker tour bus that runs continually and you can get on and off as you wish. Included is a night tour of the city. Assuming no rain (unlikely as per forecast) we will be able to sit on the top and really enjoy the sights.
You will notice that I do not have any pictures today to share. Really it was a driving day and not picturesque. Check for tomorrows blog...should be lots to share then.
