| Wright Bros |
You need to know that the museum is made up of 2 floors with a variety of galleries of different themes. There are so many different galleries it is difficult to get to them all in one day. This was explained to us by our guide who skipped several as she walked us through the others. However in an hour and half she did a great job of sharing information and kept us moving. I really enjoyed the history of aviation which included the Wright Brothers and their first plane. We looked at war planes, test planes etc. Then we started to look at the space program from early jets to rockets to spacecrafts. I cannot begin to bring justice to describe all that was there so I will let the pictures show some of what we saw. However, please note that this does not even begin to describe all that was there.
After walking around for a few hours we decided to take a break and watch the Imax theatre about the Hubble in 3 D. This was really interested and Wes learned about the tadpole nebulous universe where stars are born. (Wes’ wording not mine.) For my perspective I really enjoyed the history of hubble.
After the Air and Space Museum we headed over the the American History Museum. Once again we walked into a museum that had 3 floors with an east and west wing. Themes for the galleries included all aspects of American history. In some cases it was periods of time like 1700-1800 and in other areas they were galleries based on themes such as Kitchens, Innovations, War Years, Transportation, etc.
We started going through the galleries and I have to admit that I really enjoyed much of what we saw. Onehighlights for me would have been the Julie Child display with clips from her cooking shows. I enjoyed watching clips from her TV show and of course her kitchen was interesting with the color scheme. What seemed to be out of place was the Kitchen Aid mixer (looked very modern) on the counter.
Another highlight was the transportation museum with cars, trucks, trains and boats. The passenger train model included a sleeper car which I remember from my childhood traveling to Nova Scotia. I also came across a picture of the driving training course that reminded me of the training course I took so could finally show a picture to Wes.
The last highlight was the President’s and the first ladies displays. In particular it was interesting to see all the dresses of the first ladies that were on display. I found it very interesting to walk around and look at portraits of all the President’s and first Ladies.
Of course it was fun to look at some of the displays of American icons, like Dorothy's shoes from the Wizard of Oz, or Hermit from the muffets, or
The one thing that would have been good to take a picture would have been the US Flag on display. This was the flag flown over a fort while the British bombarded the fort in Baltimore (Fort McHenry). But pictures were forbidden. Apparently this battle inspired the song that is now the American Anthem.
At one point walking between the museums we were able to walk through the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden.
From here we went to find a place for dinner and found a really nice Irish pub that had good food and a lively atmosphere. From there we wandered to the movie theatre down the street to watch a movie – Salt. What a relaxing way to end a day and give our feet and backs a chance to relax. By this time my feet were starting to recover.
