26 27 SEP 2010 Las Vegas Days

This is a break from the travel and a time to get caught up on some chores. We started the day with a late get up taking a rare time to sleep in. By the time we did some computer work and sauntered down to breakfast, we were already looking at 10. Our goal was to get the laundry done today so that was where we started after breakfast. By the time we got all laundry cleaned, dried and folded it was getting close to 1 pm.

Since we had such a late breakfast we did not bother having lunch but instead headed off for the factory outlet mall to look for some bargains. I found a pair of running shoes, Wes found running shoes and light hikers and I also found some new denim shorts. Everything was way less cost than we would be paying back home – everything on sale right now.

I have noticed that the quality of my photos are not as color defined as I prefer and with some research realize that the bright sun on canyon pictures would be better if I had a polarized filter but this would mean that I needed to find a camera shop that had the filter and adapter for my camera. So we started to look at options at the factory outlet and no luck but I did get introduced to the new DSRL cameras and am so tempted. However, common sense prevailed, and I walked away from the temptation. Still need to try to find the adapter and filter but so far no luck at any place we went to.

We also wanted to find a Micro SD Memory for the GPS so Best Buy was on our list. Again great prices compared to home.

We returned to our room having felt tired from all the shopping but for me I really enjoyed the change of pace today. The evening was a late dinner, play the slots (I am ahead a huge amount of about $4) and reading.

On Monday we got up again at slow pace with no serious plans. We did want to do some shopping again for a few supplies and stop at a couple more camera shops. But the big goal is to head off to Red Rock Canyon.

Red Rock Canyon is just outside Las Vegas and a very short drive. The heat is such that it would have to be mainly a scenic drive around the park. Temperatures are sitting at 38. As it is the first place to stop was beside the sandstone mountain with the red and white sandstone ridges. We of course had to walk down and take some pictures. We continued to drive to find the ‘sandstone quarry’ where sandstone had been cut out into block for construction purposes.

We continued to look at the ‘Lost Creek’ walk and the waterfall. The lost creek is a spring that comes to the surface, runs for a short distance and disappears underground. The waterfall is seasonal – no water at this time of year. So we walked back along the education exploratory walk – not very exciting but at least we were doing some walking.

After the lost creek walk, we moved on to the Pines Canyon and old homestead walk. Again we walked along a 2 mile path return in the middle of the day with no water or sunscreen to see what we could find. Wes would have happily walked up into the canyon with the pyramid type rock formation at the opening but by the time we had walked 30 minutes looking at rocks, drought looking plants and no homestead evidence I felt we had given up enough sweat. We agreed that we were not really properly prepared for a long walk and returned to the car. As it was we were gone for 45 minutes and with the heat that was enough to create a huge thirst for both of us. The hikes in the Red Rock Canyon would be interesting but will have to be done during the cooler season.

The news today is reporting a record heat wave for the next few days. This should be interesting but since we have agreed to stay in hotels in Palm Springs we should be ok. Way too hot for camping.

After we went to The Orleans for the Buffet Dinner (way too much food folks but all good), we decided to go to a movie “The American”. The Orleans has 18 theatres there so we did not need to travel to see the movie. As we waited we discovered the slot machines and enjoyed a game of black jack and lost 1 dollar. However, we are still up about $3 up in total so felt that we had to play a bit after the movie. We broke even on that play time – actually up 5 cents. We are obviously not big gamblers but leave Las Vegas tomorrow 3 dollars up in the gambling.
