29 JUL 2010

Wow, we are on the road again. This time we get to explore a few kms of Sask and head into Manitoba.

We left Noreen’s house with the GPS set up so we could find the nearest Esso station. We are heading towards the highway when it says to take a left turn etc. We had a nice view of some back streets of Yorkton (very strange streets in this town for sure) and ended up about 4 blocks from Noreen’s house opposite to where we started....who says the GPS is smarter. Turning around would have been quicker than a city tour.

“On the Road Again” I think is a Willey Nelson song and that is what we are. Fortunately I am not singing it in the car as we travel or I might be walking part of the way. Notice how flat this country is. I observed two things...if you find a valley (and I use the term REALLY loosely) it means that you found a river, or creek, or brook. Regardless you drop down 75 feet cross a bridge and climb up again to the pancake landscape.

The second observation is that if you see a grove of trees ahead, there is a house and farm hidden in the middle of it. And I do mean in the middle with the house completely surrounded like a castle with it wooden turrets. Winds must be fun here.

For the book clubbers, we drove through Margaret Lawrence’s hometown of Neepawa. This was not hard to find since there was a large sign declaring the fact. No we did not stop to tour the house.

We stopped in Portage La Prairie for lunch and discovered the mall thinking we would find interesting options. What we discovered was a mall that was virtually closed down with only one food item in the food court. If this is an indication, this town is having a really rough time. We found a subway so was not a problem.

We finally arrived outside Winnipeg and took the Perimeter Road – what a great route that was. We skirted around Winnipeg so we could travel north to Grand Beach on Lake Winnipeg. We were awed by the size of the lake.

We did not know how large, but it is the 6th largest lake in Canada, is about 425 km long, wide enough not be be able to see across so feels like a ocean type beach (no tides really and no salt). We also learned that it has a maximum depth of 118 feet and an average depth of 32 feet. Along the incredibly sandy beach the water is very shallow and therefore warm.

YES I SWAM IN IT that is how warm it was.

Wes bagged another lake swim in another province.

After dinner Wes suggested a walk along the beach. Now Grand Beach is a 3 km length beach with a natural lagoon behind the beach. The west side and east side beaches are separated by a foot bridge that spans the mouth of the lagoon. So the idea was to walk the beach and silly me thought an hour’s walk would be great forgetting that Wes was planning the walk. So we walked the beach and then completely around the lagoon – I figure a minor 10 km walk in total. We did not get back to the tent until after 10 pm. Nice walk and really got me ready to sleep.

Seriously this is one of the nicest places to visit and we both are talking about the next time we come we want to spend a few days. Ok, the mosquitoes did chase me out of shorts into pants but more off would have helped.

As we walked the beach here is a sand sculpture that someone worked on.  Apparently there will be a competition this weekend and someone was practising.

Artsy shot with sun

We are looking at tomorrow and think that we will get to Ontario at least. Thunder Bay is our thoughts.

The sunset was good too.
