Day 2 11 JUL 2010

Sunday, 11-JUL-2010

The weather last night really cooled with some rain which meant that sleeping was good. It seems that most places here do no have air conditioning – rather than in the cars – which may explain why so many seem to be driving around town.

This morning at breakfast we met 2 other skyline hikers staying here as well. But what was even more interesting was to chat with a couple from the US. They are here to hike, bike and holiday. Very nice couple.

We did manage to meet the required check in time of 9 so that we could join 5 others from Kamloops to hike in the Sunshine Meadows (Sunshine Ski hill). The school bus ride up the hill to the base of the ski hill really was a jolt of memory from the past when I rode the bus regularly to school. However, once up the hill we had a great hike. From this alpine meadows we could see many mountain peaks in the distance, including Mount Assinaboine (although it was covered a bit with clouds).

The hike included the Rock Island Circuit which involved 3 lakes. We were able to enjoy a lookout and identified many flowers. However, it is early for many flowers this year since it has been a cool/late spring.

At one point we split into 2 parties, those who wanted to show sanity and return by the 2:30 and those wishing for the later 3:30 bus. They took a longer more scenic route back to the start while the sane ones took the direct route back. Guess which group I was in?

Tonight we had an introduction to Molar Pass and it will be fun, I hope. Weather man talks about rain which means a wet hike in but again, that is part of the adventure - I tell myself that again and again.

Wes and I had a really good day visiting with friends from the skyline hikers that we have not seen since last year. In addition, another highlight has to have been the incredible views of the mountains and lakes in Sunshine Meadows. Pictures will follow soon.

For the next week I will be in the back country so will not have access to the internet to upload any news.  But next Saturday I should have lots.
