18 AUG 2010

This is a day to explore PEI so it was a casual start. We had to have a look at the beach and marvelled at the redness of the sand. Of course we learned that it also stains the running shoes. I was able to capture a picture of the ferry we rode on yesterday leaving for Nova Scotia.

Today was forecasted to be cloudy and rainy so we were delighted to see a layer of clouds but basically a really sunny day. So a drive along the scenic coastal route around the eastern and northern end of the island was planned. We really did not have any plans for today other than perhaps Anne of Green Gables and the Fisherman’s Wharf in Rustico for dinner.

It was not long driving before we realized that the landscape was really pretty, but we were not driving along the coastline at all. We were far enough inland to only get a few glimpses of the ocean. So after about an half hour we changed our plans and headed cross country to Charlottetown. We figured that we needed to see the Confederation City where the beginning of Canada was developed. What we discovered when we got to the center of town was that we were in time for a performance of young singers in the square. The theme was the Spirit and History of PEI. For 45 minutes we were entertained beyond what would be believed. This is going to be one of the highlights of my memories of this trip.

We did tour the PEI Parliament buildings where the men from Upper, Lower, and Maritime provinces met to discuss a union and signed the agreements for Confederation.

From Charlottetown we continued to travel to the Cavandish area where we found a campsite in a National Park. This park has an beach on the ocean that is safe, warm and inviting. So I actually went for a swim. I enjoyed the water until I started to see the jelly fish floating around so that was enough for me.

Wes was not feeling well so this became a very layed back day for him as he napped and relaxed. He had a headache that was not willing to disappear easily. However by dinner time all was well again and we headed off to Rustico to find the fisherman’s wharf. Our plan was to go find a lobster dinner but we found that the special of the day looked very interesting and something we had never experienced, fried clams so that was our option. The meal was so filling we were not able to finish it all.

I am not a big seafood eater, but for some reason when in the Maritimes I seem to be willing to taste and enjoy new digestive delights from the sea. (sounds good doesn’t it?)

After a little bit of driving around we headed back to camp to relax for the rest of the evening. Wes enjoyed walking along the beach and exploring around the campsite while I relaxed to read. I have a slight head ache coming on and wanted to get rid of it before it became worse.
